Stellenbosch is one of the oldest towns in South Africa, fondly known as the City of Oaks. The town is a favoured place in which to live for wine enthusiasts, academic students and farming families alike.

The oldest suburb in Stellenbosch is Mostertsdrift. It is located within the historical centre of the town within a protected valley on the banks of the Eerste River.
